The Mackinac Bridge... What a gorgeous structure!
Five miles long, separating the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, with center standards over 500' high, and thousands of feet of cable. To my west is Lake Michigan, to the east, Lake Huron. After paying $2 ( a pittance), the pickup truck escort service arrives and within minutes we are across the isthmus to Mackinac City. (From here, one can take a ferry to non-motorized Mackinaw Island, highly recommended for the romantic destination vacation).

Once on the lower peninsula, it's SE to Cheboygan, past Black Lake then to Onaway. Next to an iron fabrication plant are the evidence of hours of dedicated effort: 10 foot high busts of Lady Liberty, Abe Lincoln and George Washington, creatively formed from welded steel and cable and painted brilliantly. I chose the Lady to sit under while munching my Subway footlong (still $5!) Heading south, I meet Larry Erickson just north of Atlanta. Larry, out on a 300 mile cycle ride, lives in Vermont now, but is originally from Michigan. More hot miles (sun's back out today) south on SR 33, through some hills near Comins, then on tired legs into Mio and the Pinewood Motel. I didn't add up all the short legs of today's ride til after and it turns out to have been a 110 mile day.
Restaurants are all closed by now, so it's a can of chili, a can of cream corn and quick night... (except for the Tour de France, of course...)
